Not confirmed

As of Oct 24, 2026: the I bond and EE bond rates for bonds issued from Nov 1, 2026 are not published; Treasury bill auction schedules for December 2026 beyond those listed above are not yet announced; and the TreasuryDirect pages checked do not state a cutoff for which calendar year a late-December savings bond purchase counts toward. None of these are estimated here.

Frequently asked questions

Does the I bond purchase limit reset on Jan 1?

Yes. TreasuryDirect lists the limit per calendar year: up to $10,000 in electronic Series I bonds and, separately, up to $10,000 in electronic Series EE bonds per Social Security Number (checked Oct 24, 2026). Gift purchases are counted separately under TreasuryDirect's rules.

In which tax year is T-bill interest reported?

IRS Publication 550 says the difference between the discounted price and the face value is interest income, generally reported when the bill is paid at maturity. A bill that matures in January 2027 generally produces 2027 interest income.

In which year is CD interest reported?

Per IRS Publication 550, CD interest is generally included in income when it is actually received or is available without a substantial penalty, including CDs of 1 year or less that pay at maturity. CDs that defer interest for more than 1 year follow the original issue discount rules.

When is savings bond interest taxed?

IRS Publication 550 says EE and I bond interest is payable when the bond is redeemed. TreasuryDirect notes the owner can choose to report each year's earnings or wait until the bond is cashed in or reaches final maturity.

Is this tax or investment advice?

No. This page summarizes published IRS and TreasuryDirect rules and Treasury auction data. Individual situations differ; a tax professional can address specifics.
